The router and Airport base station are both about 5 years old, and it's conceivable that something went wrong with one of them, but it seems a little fishy that this happened just as I updated the Airport. I tried rebooting both the laptop and the router/Airport several times, but that didn't help. There’s likely no urgency in downloading this update, but AirPort Utility 5.5.3 fixes various unspecified bugs, along with one that could cause a crash during setup. Up to that point, my wireless connection through Airport was working fine, but right around the time the update was installed, I lost all connectivity. This morning I installed the 5.5.3 update to Airport Utility when prompted by Software Update (Macbook, 10.6.7).
